Col. Hartwell W. Palmer photographs collection [graphic], circa 1954

Photographs mostly relating to the 1954 retirement of Col. Hartwell W. Palmer, a sixteen-year employee of the Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood, Or. Palmer was a retired Army cavalry colonel who was well-beloved by visitors and staff at the lodge. He worked at Timberline from 1938-1954, first as the operator of the horse concession, then lecturer and chief guide, lodge caretaker, and traffic supervisor in charge of the parking lot. The photographs mostly depict his retirement parties in 1954, as well as other undated photographs of Palmer with other staff members. There is also one album in the collection, which has been photocopied and disbound due to preservation concerns; it contains photographs, newspaper clippings, telegrams, letters, and other memorabilia relating to Palmer's retirement party in January 1954. Most of the photographs were taken by Ackroyd Photography Inc. of Portland, Or.
